The Little SEO Tip That Could – Part 2

16 Apr

Last week, I drove home my #1 tip: not trying to outsmart Google. Before we continue, though, it’s worth saying again:

Don’t try to sketchily “trick” Google into ranking your site higher. It’s NOT worth it.

To get your site higher in Google’s search rankings, you need to provide worthwhile content on a regular basis – but can you include just anything?

The short answer is “nope, sorry.” Your new content has to be fresh and interesting for your readership. To create the kind of content that Google loves, here’s what you have to do:

  • Post regularly, at least once a week or preferably more often.
  • DO NOT copy other people’s posts. Google knows if you’re plagiarizing and your site will be penalized accordingly.
  • There is no magic word count number, but to find the right length for you, read this helpful post.
  • Include keywords in your article in strategic places such as the title and within the first sentence or two. (Next week I’ll be doing a longer post specifically about keywords, so stay tuned for that one!)

If you would like help getting your website ranked higher in Google, please get in touch with me. I have gotten websites ranking on the first page of Google in JUST ONE DAY (no kidding!). I can also help you manage your blog so you can have a “set it and forget it” system to grow your search engine traffic without any extra time commitments or writing expertise on your part.

Stay tuned for next week when I’ll talk about how to choose and place keywords for optimal Google visibility.

The Little SEO Tip That Could – Part 1

9 Apr

SEO – or Search Engine Optimization – has a lot of people confused.

People who have mastered SEO – or at least those who claim to have mastered it – sell their services for thousands of dollars… but not every business can afford the expensive services of an SEO expert.

The fact is that it is difficult to “master” SEO because SEO skills and techniques are always changing. Google recently updated their algorithm and sent thousands of top-ranking sites into a tailspin. So, how are you supposed to keep on top of Google’s ever-changing rules to climb your way to the top of their search ranks?

The #1 SEO tip is to NOT try to “outsmart” Google.

Google’s algorithm is smarter than your SEO expert; that’s a fact. A lot of people try to “trick Google” into putting their site near the top, and that is a very, very bad idea. Google will figure it out. Maybe that sounds big-brothery, but Google ALWAYS figures your tricks out. If you want Google on your side, stay away from sneaky tactics. At best they will work in the short term and at worst Google will blacklist your site for being tricky.

Search Engine Optimization is not a science to be mastered. It is a quality of content to be achieved.

The better your content is, the higher you will rank with Google. It’s as simple as that. I have no idea how Google figures it out (well, mostly I don’t), but figure it out they do. If real human beings like your content, Google will like your content, too.

That said, there are some important things you can do to help make sure your site IS quality and that people DO like it, as well as to help point Google’s eyeballs right toward your content. In the posts that follow, I’m going to show you how.

Stay tuned for next Monday!
